Men's Health Month starts today!

Hi Reader!

June is Men's Health Month; an entire month dedicated to help the men and boys in our lives be proactive in their health. Is a whole month necessary to have such a focus on men's health? ABSOLUTELY!

For starters, men are less likely to seek medical attention, have lower life expectancies than women, and tend to engage in more risk-taking behaviors such as smoking and drinking.

Steps you can take to improve the quality and length of your life

  • Eat a varied diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole-grains.
  • Moderate exercise for 30 minutes five times per week, or vigorous exercise for 20 minutes three times per week.
  • Protect yourself from the sun.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Drink water everyday.
  • Limit alcohol to two drinks per day or less.
  • Don't smoke, and minimize your exposure to second-hand smoke.
  • See your doctor regularly.
  • Know your family history and discuss it with your doctor.
  • If you are over 40, get a baseline PSA (prostate specific antigen test) and monitor this periodically with your doctor.
  • Practice safe sex.
  • Wear a seatbelt when you are in the car, or wear a helmet when on a motorcycle or bicycle.
  • Practice stress management.
  • Get help if you need it.
